Feng Shui: How to Find a Good Location for your Home?

By: fongsuimy

Since Feng Shui is a study of how we are affected by the surroundings - the correct location of our house - where we spend more of our time, is the primary key to having good Feng Shui.
Alright, what are the things that we ought to consider?
The ancient Chinese believe that the presence of Sheng Qi is crucial to our well being. Sheng Qi stands for qi that has life, and is a form of energy invisible to us. Wherever we see plants and animals growing and flourishing, we know that it is present. Therefore always look for a place with rich soil and lush rich vegetation. On the contrary, avoid rocky terrains or one where even grass strains to grow!
Subsequent things that we will watch out for can be found close to hills and mountains The ancient Chinese believe that 'qi' moves from a higher level to a lower level of ground. Where the mountains and hills meet a flatter section of land or a gradual slope the 'qi' will slowdown and collect. At the time it encounters water e.g. lake or stream it stops. Therefore the best place to locate a house is on a flat or on a gentle slope with the mountain or hills at the back, and to provide a support and qi,with a lake or river in front to stop and to allow qi to accumulate.
This belief is best reflected in the traditional Chinese saying, “Mountain at back, facing water”.
According to the ancient sages, ‘qi’ can be dispersed by the wind. When looking at your lake or river, ideally there should be low rises on both sides of the dwelling. This kind of hills of low height will shield the 'qi' and not let it be simply carried away by the wind.
Since the majority of us are city dwellings, finding such an ideal site is next to impossible. Don't despair -- there's hope.
Here are a few useful tips for urban houses.
The principle about the fauna and flora is valid even now. Nevertheless, pursue the search for high yield soil and abundant plant life.
Do not purchase a dwelling situated at the crest of a hill as 'qi' can be blown away Remember a home that's exposed to high winds cannot accumulate 'qi'. You should also avoid one that it located in a deep land locked valley as there is the danger of ‘qi’ stagnating. Equally undesirable is one located on steep slopes. 'Qi' cannot grow on a sharp incline, and besides, you'll be in danger of landslides.
All the time search for one which is situated on moderate gradients, or has a higher field at its rear. The ground in front of the residence should be lower. It would be great if it faces a clean river or lake. If not an open locale like a broad street or sports ground or even a wide road will be enough.
What if the land is flat? Support at the back can be in the form of a neighbor’s house. If you have space you can plant some trees for support The trees will also help to accumulate ‘qi’.
The land in front should not be much higher than the house. Don't forget that you can agitate water by putting in a small fountain or pond in the foreground. "Plants gather qi" according to a Chinese saying. Thus, the accrual of 'qi' can be augmented by planting trees in the front.
Do not have a home that face a steep slope and a valley behind.
Ideally, there should be houses on both sides, in order to protect your location from the brunt of the winds.
Since your home is the place where you'll want to relax, you should seek out a peaceful location. You would do well to not purchase a dwelling that is in close proximity of a highly used highway full of noise, or has a highly used road at its front!
