Dogs tend to think with their stomach. It may take some time to get your dog to do what you want them to, but the results always outweigh the difficulties
The last thing to remember is to treat your dog as a co worker. It takes the two of you to make it work correctly. If you are irritated with your dog they will know it. This makes things much more difficult. The proper motivation has to be love. You are teaching them to be a lifetime companion. You of course are training them to live within your space, so it benefits you more. However, if you are treating your dog with love they will be happy that they are pleasing you. If you see training your dog as a means to benefit both of your lives then you will have a good result. If you just stick to basic training then that is all you need. After potty training and proper behavior training like not begging at the dinner table, the rest is optional. If you do decide to train your dog to do tricks, it will be less complicated since they already have a solid foundation already.
