How come we are getting fatter?

By: Farida Riyasat

Everywhere, across the world, people are gaining weight. The obesity problem is reaching countries such as China, Japan and even Korea, where the population weight had never been a source of concern in the past. An increasing waistline is a problem virtually everyone shares. How come we are becoming so fat as a species? Poor nutrition can be the only answer. Based on the old adage "we are what we eat" it should be clear that our health and nutrition is severely compromised. Our ever-expanding girth should come as no surprise when fast food restaurants spring-up like weeds, individual serving sizes can feed at least two people and food quality has decreased. An answer does exist, though it can only be found by learning about proper nutrition.
We are too focused today on the good taste of food that we forget that it is just a fuel for our body. We get the energy needed to get through the day from food. When there is a surplus of fuel, the body stores it as fat. When we gain weight, it is not our body getting revenge, it's just the way our body is designed to work. Fat has several important functions for our body. It is fat which provides us with heat when we are cold, also the insulation to our bones and internal organs and even to our muscles is provided by fat only. Excess calories get turned into fat when we eat too much, and we don't burn off those calories with exercise or everyday activities. These are nutritional considerations that we must take into account. With the vast amounts that people eat in today's world, fat builds up alarmingly quick.
Balance Is Important
Balance is at the center of good nutrition. You'll not have to deny yourself the foods, treats, and even desserts you love. To avoid getting overweight you will need to balance these carefully. It is important that your diet contain enough fruits, vegetables, lean meats and nutrition supplements. Treats and desserts can be used to reward yourself for sticking to your nutrition plan all week. You can still splurge on your favorite foods one or two days a week as long as you eat well the rest of the week and incorporate exercise to burn off those extra calories.
If You Weigh Too Much
If you currently weigh too much and desire to shed those excess pounds, good nutrition paired with exercise is the only means to achieve it. A balanced diet means that you eat smaller amounts but more often. (like six meals daily) and regular intervals of exercise, thirty minutes long and three to five times a week, can help to ensure that the weight will come off. Weight loss has no quick fix. It isn't going to be effortless. In the commercial and informecial shows they are all panting and sweating till they die,but here there is no need to do the same. If your nutrition is balanced, you can burn enough calories to lose weight with just a few walks around the block each day.
